Lance Coburn

In the Bonn International Beethoven Festival, critics described his five sonata recital as “refreshing….uncompromising….unacademic….”

In the Accademia Filharmonica Concert Series Verona Italy the critics said “Coburn’s piano playing is characterised by an undoubted technical mastery which allowed us to experience precious moments of tonal exploration”.

…one sat awe-inspired in amazement, wondering how it could possibly be played any better…” is how the Kölnische Rundschau described Lance Coburn’s performance of Prokofiev’s 3rd Piano Concerto.

Since winning first prize at the Tomassoni International Piano Competition, Cologne in 2001, Lance has performed in multiple countries over all five continents. He has performed as a soloist with with the WDR – Cologne Orchestra, the Central Florida Orchestra, the Israel and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, the RTE National Symphony and Hibernian Orchestras in Dublin and most Australian Orchestras. Lance has been the recipient of many first prizes, including the Hephizibah Menuhin Scholarship, the inaugural Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition and the Australian Young Performers’ Award (Keyboard Section) culminating in a performance of Liszt’s 1st Piano Concerto with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, in the Sydney Opera House, which was also broadcast live across Australia on ABC Television. Classical releases include Michele Esposito Violin and Cello Sonatas with Champs Hill, Tchaikovsky Solo Piano Works ‘Potpourri’ with Naxos and Solo Piano Works of Carl Vine with Modal Citizen Records.

Beginning his studies aged 7 in his homeland of New Zealand, Lance went on to study in Australia graduating from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music with the school’s highest honours being awarded the Conservatorium and Griffith University Medals. After completion of his Masters degree in the QCM, he furthered postgraduate studies in the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow and finally in the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.

His reputation as a dynamic chamber musician – with over 200 works in his repertoire – has grown in recent years playing with leading chamber ensembles including the ConTempo Quartet and the Piatti Quartet. He performed as both a soloist and chamber musician in many notable festivals. Highlights include The Beethoven International Festival in Bonn, The Dublin International Piano Festival and The Great Music in Irish Houses Festival. He toured with acclaimed dance companies Daghdha and CoisCéim in Ireland and Australia.

A passionate educator, Lance has been a full time faculty member of the Royal Irish Academy of Music since 2005. He is a regular adjudicator in National and International music festivals and is in much demand for piano masterclasses.
